159. I am a first year education student at St Mary's College of Marlyand. I am enrolled in a class called Research methods in human studies and we are doing a research assignment on a topic of our choice. I want to teach Special Education so I chose "Do students with learning disabilities tend to be more of a behavor problem?" This is of intrest to me because not only am I passionate about becoming a teacher, I am also learning disabled. I have dyslexia. I was wondering if there is anyway that you could answer my question or steer me in the right direction and being able to have enough research to write a paper that is understandable and answers the question that I have proposed for my paper. P.S. - The only information that I have been able to find is how to deal with students that are learning disabled and behavior problems. While this is good to know it is not exactly what I am searching for...
But I must admit up-front that I do not claim to be an expert on Special Education nor on learning disabilities.
I do not know of any research study that has compared
(1) the number of behavior problems of students with learning disabilities to
(2) the number of behavior problems of students with no learning disabilities
within the same class.
I believe that what usually happens is that, as a result of learning and/or behavior problems, students are referred to Special Education for testing and diagnosis. Then, students are identified as learning disabled and placed on Special Education classes for part or for all of the instructional time.
Only in "inclusion" classes where students with learning disabilities are fully integrated into regular classes with non-disabled students, can your question be answered. And even in these inclusion classes there is additional help such as paraprofessionals or instructional assistants to help students with disabilities. Such additional help may alleviate behavior problems of students with learning disabilities.
It is important that you consider the time during which the student --with or without learning disabilities--becomes a problem student. Since learning disabilities may cause the behavior problems, the student with learning disabilities is usually referred to, tested, diagnosed and identified as a Special Education student AFTER the behavior problems exists. Then, the student may be removed fully or partially from the regular classroom to prevent the problem behavior to continue to occur.
