171. What types of standardized state testing are available in other languages for ESL students?

I was personally involved in the translation of ALL SMART START units, tests and instructional activities for K-5 students who may need testing in Spanish, their primary language, because they may not know sufficient English to be tested in this language. The Arkansas Department of Education, under the leadership of Dr. Andre L. Guerrero has --for several years now-- provided for portfolio assessment of English Language Learners, that is, students who are non- or limited-English-proficient.

There are tests specifically designed to measure the proficiency level of English Language Learners, among them, the LAS or Language Assessment Scale. You may wish to talk to your district's assessment coordinator to determine which tests they use with the ESL students.
