Hello! I attended the ESL Academy in the summer of 2001. I really enjoyed your training. It changed the way that I teach my students, making me a better teacher! Thank you!  I am looking for guidence with the ESL program in our district. We are recently experiencing an increase in the number of ELLs. We are looking at expanding our program. At this time, we have an uncertified tutor. We are looking at having ESL classes. I am searching for a skills checklist for our ESL program. That way we can monitor the language skills being mastered. Can you guide me to where I might find a sample of this to use as a guide?

YOU ARE the BEST TEACHER because you care for ALL your students and, thus, YOU attended the ESL Academy in 2001!!! Other teachers care but do not take action to BEST serve their students!!! YOU DID!!!!  You may wish to visit the Web Site for TESOL --Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. They have developed a complete list of skills for the different ESL levels that students usually go through. HOWEVER -- Please, DO REMEMBER that students must be provided an "equal educational opportunity and equal access to the core curriculum." Thus, your program needs to be fully coordinated and correlated with all other areas of the curriculum so that the ESL class PREPARES the non-English speaking students to succeed in their daily core content area classes!!!

I am sure that other school districts in Arkansas --larger districts that have been working on these issues for some time-- have already developed guidelines and/or frameworks or curriculum guides that can be of help to you. I am sure you do not need to reinvent the wheel!!! Notice I have sent copies of this reply to other districts that you may find helpful as you expand your program. These districts have larger programs, I am sure. Also Dr. Guerrero has been working on defining an ESL framework for testing purposes. This may also be helpful to you.

We are currently revamping our program/curriculum to match the new Arkansas English Language Acquisition Frameworks. Those can be found at the ADE web site at the following link:

You may have to cut and paste that into your web browser for it to work. Rogers' ESL curriculum is already fairly aligned with that framework, but we are double checking to make sure.
