278.    Just wondering if you can help me in studing to be a teacher's aide; at the moment and i'm stuck on a question.  What are some of the qualities and skills you think are essential for a teacher's aide to be a good  ESL teacher's aide? If you have any answers for me i would be grateful.

ANSWER:

There are MANY questions and answers in my Web Sites about teaching assistants or aides.   I think it is wonderful that you have decided to become a teaching aide or teacher's aide for ESL.   Here is my answer to your reply!!!!!  

The most important quality is your understanding that the MAIN responsibility for student learning rests with the TEACHER, not with you.   So the teacher and you need to have sometime every day, BEFORE school begins, to plan what will happen during each lesson of the day as you work WITH that teacher in promoting learning.  
 
Many teachers are ill-equipped to help and work in the BEST and MOST EFFECTIVE way with teacher aides.   They do not understand that aides are to be involved in the follow-up part of the lesson AFTER the teacher has instructed the whole class during the actual body of the lesson.  
 
For example, while the teacher works with one group, the aide prepares another group for the lesson, or the aide follows-up on the lesson with a different group AFTER the teacher's lesson.  
 
During the teacher's lesson to the entire class, the teacher aide can be moving about the class making sure students are following the teacher's instructions and correctly following the steps that the teacher may require of the students.   
 
If you do not work together in the same classroom and at the same time as the teacher (if you "pull-out" students to work separately with them in another classroom), then you MUST always PLAN with the teacher what you are to be doing.   Your job is to help students master, with additional practice or support, what the teacher has taught.
 
Also, if you are really lucky to work with a GREAT teacher, you can learn GREAT TEACHING skills by observing how the teacher conducts the lessons and manages the classroom environment.   
 
I know that the FIRST time you do something it may look or appear difficult and complicated.   But the more you communicate with the teacher and the more questions you ask about what you need to be doing and how, the more successful you will be.  
 
I also hope that you receive training through the school or school district you work for.   It is the responsibility of the school to train its teacher assistants and the school or district should provide you with help to do your BEST.
