280.  Re: Training Videos/Training Programs Relating to E.S.L.

Guten Tag Dr. Sanchez Sadek!  I think you have lots and lots of information I could desperately use.  I teach ESL at an Elementary School in Germany.  I work with students grades K-5.  I have forty students from thirteen ethnic backgrounds.  The only thing our school has is: Into English, Hampton Brown.  I am always looking for materials that will enhance the learning of English for my students.   I have various Reading, Phonics and a variety of Language Skill books.  The students learn the language quite fast.  Do you have a list of things I can purchase?  I have given the teachers about five handouts that I wrote about ESL.  If you have anything I can share with the staff, would you please sent it to me.  Are you going to the TESOL conference in San Antonio?  I am from San Antonio.  I wanted to attend.  I think, I might want to push this thought.

ANSWER:

¡Buenos días, Marrah Villareal, and WARMEST greetings from Los Angeles, California!    THANK YOU so very much for visiting my Web Sites and for your enthusiastic appreciation of the information in my Web Sites.   You seem to enjoy a lot what you are doing, and doing your job quite professionally -- Congratulations!!!!

Please, feel free to use (download and copy) any information in my Web Sites.   That is why the information --as questions and answers-- is there, to help anyone who may benefit from the information.   Now, I have to be extremely impartial about instructional materials.   I do NOT recommend any instructional materials.   I only mention materials if they are part of a lesson or demonstration that I have provided.

I strongly believe that the MOST important quality of a teacher is THE EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING that the teacher brings to the lesson.  Instructional materials are indeed very important, but in the hands of a teacher who does NOT have knowledge and skills in teaching excellently, materials are of reduced relevance to a successful lesson.

I think you are RIGHT!!!!   Attend TESOL, especially in wonderful San Antonio (where I attended another wonderful conference a few years ago).   We will have CABE (California Association for Bilingual Education) in Los Angeles, Feb. 23-26, and TABE (Texas Association for Bilingual Education) is usually in October, last year in El Paso --another just wonderful city where I have provided countless training programs for teachers in several school districts in the area).

Meantime, enjoy WINTER in Germany (TOOOOOOO COLLLLLDDDDD for me!!!!) or visit us in California at balmy 65-75 degrees --a couple of weeks ago all the way into the 80's!!!!!!   Best wishes, C.S.S.
